Food photography

I’ve spent the day cooking.  You’d think we were expecting company, but I made small amounts of 15 different recipes today.

I’m working on the photos for the next cookbook, which happens to be all about Halloween party foods.  You know…the stuff with the horrible and often not particularly polite names.  Thankfully, it’s not all kid-oriented food, but rather a mixture of items like would be used if one was giving a Halloween party that also included adults.

Like the stuff we buy, it is more about the name than it is any real differences in the food.  Sometimes there are also some differences in the presentation as well.  It’s about the fun, in any case.

The truly weird part is that I’m doing Halloween in August, even further ahead than the retail merchandisers are marketing their costumes and decorations.

I’m also late, and working under a deadline.  The entire situation is rather humorous, as I crank out one after another of these Halloween dishes to photograph them, and then hand wash the dishes.  Our kitchen is original to the house, and the house is mid-20th century.  That means that a lot of things are not very convenient, as a lot of things have changed since the house was built.

Like dishwashers.

I have wished fervently for one the past few days, as I dirty plates, bowls, platters, trays, pans, and pots galore.  Oh and knives and utensils, as well.  And more serving dishes, as well as baking sheets.  Maybe some lighter weight mixing bowls that are easier to wash than my sturdy old glass ones would be nice.  I’d like to purchase some additional good wooden spoons, along with another silicone spatula for mixing and scraping.

Oh, and a silicone baking mat or two.

So I guess I’ll be adding a few things to my wish list.  I’ll also be giving myself a stern talking-to about procrastination.  Having a crushing deadline is my own fault, along with my indigestion from tasting my photo subjects.

Now tomorrow, it’s breads, after a sort.  Small breads.  Oh, and dips.  And some chicken.  And another trip to the grocery store to buy some chicken wings.  “Hairy bat wings” are on the menu.  They will be a nice change after the “gooey gopher guts” we had last night.  With “maggots” on the side. I also need to make a batch of “cow patties” tomorrow.

You have to laugh at the names.  When I’m finished, I will post some of the photos too.  Such deliciously gross food…

Anyhow, the book will be available in digital format soon.  I’ll announce a date as soon as I’m certain of when it will be available.  In the meantime, if you’d like to get the updates and see some of the photos, you can also find my author page on Facebook right here.
