Hot cocoa is one of the most popular of hot drinks in America, right up there with hot tea and coffee. It ranks well above hot cider or other fruit-based drinks too. Almost everyone loves its chocolate-y and rich milky flavors, and while the “real deal” made with real chocolate, sugar, and scalding hot milk is undeniably a real treat, most of us use some kind of instant mix for our sweet treats on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, it can also be expensive to buy, especially when prepackaged in little envelopes in a box, with the tiny dehydrated marshmallows included. There is a cheaper way, and it’s easy to make, even if I don’t have an easy answer for tiny dehydrated marshmallows!
Here’s your recipe for a rich hot cocoa mix.
Rich Hot Cocoa Mix
- 2 c. Nestle’s “Nido” instant whole milk
- 1/4 c. Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa
- 1 c. unsweetened cocoa
- 1/2 c. granulated sugar
- 1 c. powdered sugar
- 1 c. powdered non-dairy creamer
Combine all ingredients in a 1 gallon ziplock bag and shake until evenly mixed. Store cocoa mix in an airtight container. For each serving, use about 1/4 c. cocoa mix with 12-14 oz. very hot water. Stir until dissolved. (If it tastes “watery”, it means you need another spoonful or two of mix added to the hot water.)
